For just the third time in history, a version of the Shelby GT500 will carry the “King of the Road” name. The very first production example of the 2022 Shelby GT500 KR will be sold at auction to benefit the Carroll Shelby Foundation and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). The auction will take place at the Barrett Jackson Scottsdale auction on Friday, Jan. 28 at approximately 10:30 p.m. EST; click here for more details.
One of 60 cars being produced for 2022, lot #3006 honors Shelby American's 60th anniversary with a “King of the Road” package. The winning bidder will be able to choose from any standard Ford color available on this first-production Shelby GT500KR. The entire sale price of this vehicle will benefit the Carroll Shelby Foundation and JDRF.
Based on the world-class Ford Shelby GT500, the KR packs a supercharged 5.20 liter V8 engine producing more than 900 horsepower. It’s mated to a 7-speed manual transmission from TREMEC, and the overall package includes a dry carbon-fiber hood, new wheels, tires, suspension tuning, interior, badges and more. Each car includes membership in Team Shelby, the worldwide club Carroll Shelby established in 2008, and will be documented in the official Shelby Registry.
The Carroll Shelby Foundation was created by legendary racer and automotive manufacturer Carroll Shelby. Headquartered in Gardena, California, the Foundation provides medical assistance for those in need, including children, as well as educational opportunities for young people through automotive and other training programs. JDRF is the world's largest nonprofit funder of type 1 diabetes research. Their in-house scientists oversee a diverse portfolio of research tracks, leaving no stone unturned in their search for a cure.
