DAVENTRY, UK – Daventry-based Paul McColm will next month tackle a gruelling 62 mile (100 km) ultra marathon to help raise funds for a children’s cancer charity.

Paul, who is a G4S operations manager in charge of security at Ford’s parts distribution facility, will attempt to run from London to Brighton on May 25 in aid of Young Lives Vs Cancer, a charity founded to help children and young people (0-25) and their families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them.

“Once a year, I attempt to raise money to support charities and help those less fortunate than me,” Paul told @Ford. “Last year I was able to raise over £1000 to support Help for Heroes a charity close to my heart.  This year I’m attempting to do two ultra marathons, the first of these will be from London to Brighton.

“Cancer has a lot to answer for, and no doubt we all have been affected by it during our lives, so that’s why I will be plodding to the south coast from the capital in support of Young Lives Vs Cancer.”

Paul, now 54, has run 68 half marathons, two marathons and seven ultra marathons, but he’s not underestimating the challenge he faces.

“I’m not as confident as I used to be. My body is held together with tape, and I hurt my knee in 2019 after tearing my meniscus. I have however teamed up with a few more veterans so hopefully we will crack on and support each other.

“The biggest challenges will be keeping hydrated, managing that knee, and also tiredness in the early hours of the morning and the hilly terrain.”
